🌙 My First Time Using Dowsing Rods (And What I Wish I Knew Before Starting)

When I first picked up my dowsing rods, I was excited but unsure. I followed a blog post on how to ask questions and use the rods, but it didn’t go into much detail about setting intentions or the importance of opening and closing a session with care. I created my own little practice to begin, then picked up the rods, started to connect - and hit record.

My connection with the rods came surprisingly easily, and I wanted to capture and share that moment. But I also walked away from that session feeling like something was missing.

That’s why I’ve created what I wish I had back then.

Here’s the real, unfiltered version of me trying dowsing rods for the first time.

When I started Dowsing there was not any guidance on the importance of preparation of practice. Since then, I’ve created a ritual that helps me build trust with my rods and spirit team. I want to pass that on to you.

How to Start a Dowsing Rod Practice (The Way I Do Now)

If you're feeling called to explore dowsing, here’s the practice I use to stay grounded, clear, and protected.

Before You Begin

  • Cleanse your space (smoke, sound, selenite)

  • Ground yourself with breath or visualisation

  • Hold your rods and take a moment to settle your energy

  • Say a short protection blessing

  • Call in your guides or highest self

Ask: “Is it the right time for me to use the rods today? or "Can I ask you some questions in relation to....."

Calibrate Your Rods

  • Ask: “Show me YES” - observe the direction

  • Ask: “Show me NO” - observe again

  • Ask: “Are you ready to work with me today?”

  • Test with questions you already know the answer to

During the Session

  • Ask clear yes/no questions (one at a time)

  • Pause between questions

  • Show gratitude when you receive an answer

  • Journal your answers or record them

  • Stay grounded and open

Closing the Session

  • Thank your guides, your rods, and yourself

  • Say a closing blessing (e.g., “I now close this session with love and gratitude.”)

  • Cleanse your rods if you feel called

  • Ground your energy again before returning to your day

✨ Free Download: Dowsing Rod Session Checklist

To help you feel supported and confident during your sessions, I’ve created a Free Dowsing Rod Session Checklist you can download and print. It walks you through each step - from cleansing your space to closing your session with intention.

🌕 Want to Go Deeper?

If you’re ready to build a beautiful, guided practice with your dowsing rods, I’ve created a workbook that includes:

  • My full ritual (opening + closing)

  • Rod Language

  • Clair Quiz

  • Journal prompts

  • Space to log and reflect on your sessions

Whether you're just beginning or deepening your connection, I hope this post and video remind you: You’re not alone, and your intuition is worth trusting. Keep practising. Keep asking. Keep growing.

With love,

🌙 Moonchild Blessings
